Gen. Muhoozi Backs Tumukunde’s 2026 MP Bid, Orders NRM Support in Rukungiri

Date:

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has publicly directed all National Resistance Movement (NRM) members and local structures in Rukungiri Municipality to stop opposing Lt. General Henry Tumukunde and instead rally behind his bid to contest for Member of Parliament in the 2026 general elections.

Gen. Muhoozi made the announcement on August 3, 2025, through his official X account, stating that Gen. Tumukunde deserves the support of the NRM and the people of Rukungiri.

“As far as my brother-in-law, Lt. General Henry Tumukunde, is concerned, I order all NRM structures and supporters in Rukungiri to stop fighting him,” Gen. Muhoozi posted.

He further emphasized that Tumukunde recently won the NRM primaries in Rukungiri and has shown strong grassroots support, which qualifies him to fly the NRM flag in the upcoming elections.

Gen. Henry Tumukunde, a former Security Minister and one-time Presidential candidate in the 2021 elections, ran against President Yoweri Museveni and was seen as an opposition figure at the time.

However, Tumukunde has now returned to the NRM, saying he believes it remains the only party capable of moving Uganda forward.

Gen. Muhoozi’s endorsement marks a significant political turn, especially given Tumukunde’s past rivalry with NRM leadership.

It also reflects a broader push for unity within the ruling party as Uganda heads into the 2026 electoral season.
