Four registrars of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have been arrested and remanded over allegations of electoral malpractice during last week’s party primaries.
The suspects include Vincent Matovu from Buyende District and party administrator David Baliruno. Both face two counts of forgery and uttering false documents, allegedly with the intent to compromise the integrity of the election results.
In Kamuli District, registrar Godfrey Gwambuga has been remanded to Kamuli Prison on charges of forgery, falsification of tally sheets, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Hussein Waiswa, the registrar for Mayuge District, is facing four counts, including forgery, uttering false documents, bribery, and falsifying tally sheets. In Iganga District, NRM registrar Yazid Kirunda is charged with more than three counts related to bribery, manipulation of election results, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Busoga East NRM spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed that Waiswa and Kirunda were arrested following complaints from candidates who alleged inconsistencies in the tally sheets used to declare winners. He added that key exhibits were recovered from the suspects’ homes, which have since aided the ongoing prosecution.
Meanwhile, Busoga North Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend additional suspects linked to electoral malpractice in the districts of Kamuli and Buyende.
