Military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye confirmed that three individuals survived the crash but sustained severe burns. Search and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue battling the fire and investigating the cause of the incident.
This marks the second helicopter accident involving the Ugandan military in Somalia in less than a year. In September, another transport helicopter crash-landed en route from Mogadishu to Baledogle Airfield. All four personnel survived that incident.
Uganda has been a key troop-contributing country to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia since 2007, regularly deploying forces and equipment in support of regional stability efforts.
