Sources familiar with the investigation told media that the early Tuesday morning heist may have involved insider cooperation. The calculated nature of the break-in, combined with the absence of any confrontation with security guards, has raised suspicions about internal involvement. “The incident occurred during a power outage,” one source disclosed.
“The fact that they entered without alerting or engaging the guards points to a carefully orchestrated plan, potentially with help from within,” the source added. At the time of the incident, the bank—located in Nakasongola Town—was being guarded by two private security officers from SGA Security.
Police Response
Savannah Region police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima confirmed the robbery, reporting that a total of Shs192,587,800 was stolen, along with two laptops and other unidentified items. “We have four suspects currently in custody assisting with the investigation,” he said in a statement issued roughly 12 hours after the break-in.
He did not disclose whether the suspects include bank employees or security staff. The incident was discovered by branch manager Fred Kamurasi upon arriving for work and finding the bank compromised. Police promptly launched a case of break-in and theft, deploying detectives to gather evidence, interview staff, and assess the crime scene.
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage and electronic data to identify the culprits and piece together their movements before and after the robbery.
