EC unveils revised nomination timeline for 2026 elections

Date:

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revised the schedule for nominating candidates for Local Government councils elections, including Special Interest Groups (Youths, Persons with Disabilities, and Older Persons), originally set to begin on September 3, 2025, and conclude on September 12, 2025, for all Local Government levels.

These will now occur on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the respective District/City Returning Officer’s office.

Below is the new nomination schedule:

a) District/City (Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councillors): Nominations will occur from Wednesday, September 3, 2025, to Friday, September 5, 2025, at the respective District/City Returning Officer’s office.
b) Municipality/City Division (Chairpersons and Councillors): Nominations will take place from Monday, September 8, 2025, to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the respective District/City Returning Officer’s office.
c) Sub County/Town/Municipal Divisions (Chairpersons and Councillors): Nominations will be held from Thursday, September 11, 2025, to Wednesday, September 24, 2025, excluding weekends, at the respective County Headquarters.

Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC Chairperson, announced these changes on Thursday.

“The nomination forms and guidelines for District Councilors, Municipal Councilors, and Sub-County Councilors’ elections will be collected from the respective District/City Electoral Commission Office, starting on Monday 11th August 2025,” he stated.

Nomination forms for District Chairpersons elections will be available for download from the Electoral Commission website, starting Monday, August 11, 2025.

Byabakama also revealed adjustments to the nomination dates for Parliamentary Elections, including Special Interest Groups (Youths, Persons with Disabilities, and Older Persons), previously planned for September 16, 2025, to September 17, 2025.

“The nomination forms and guidelines for Parliamentary Elections will be accessed for downloading from the EC website: www.ec.or.ug starting on Monday 11th August 2025,” he said.

The EC has set the period from Monday, August 11, 2025, to Wednesday, September 24, 2025, for collecting nomination forms and guidelines for the 2026 Presidential Elections. During this time, presidential aspirants will obtain nomination forms, supporter forms for collecting signatures from at least 100 registered voters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, and guidelines for nomination activities.

Byabakama explained that these forms and guidelines must be collected in person at the EC Head Offices on Plot 1-3 & 5, 7th Street Industrial Area, Kampala, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays. Individuals collecting nomination and supporter forms on behalf of a Political Party/Organisation must provide written authorization from the Secretary General or a designated official.

“This authorisation must be issued by the Secretary General of the Political Party/Organisation or a designated official,” Byabakama said.

Byabakama urged all stakeholders to note the remaining activities on the Roadmap and participate in accordance with the election guidelines.
