EC: Special Interest Groups elections at sub county level to be held this week

Date:

The Electoral Commission has initiated nationwide Special Interest Group (SIG) elections, beginning at the sub-county level with voting for senior citizens aged 60 and older.

The EC Spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi announced that the week-long elections will occur across all sub-counties, town councils, and divisions in Uganda.

This process aligns with Uganda’s constitutional commitment to inclusive representation for marginalized groups, including older persons, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and youth.

Elections for PWDs are set for July 16, with youth polls following on July 18. Only those elected at the parish level can vote in this sub-county stage.

Mucunguzi highlighted that the elections will use the “lining up” method, where voters stand behind their chosen candidate, agent, portrait, or symbol.

He urged participants to maintain peace and adhere to electoral rules, warning against hate speech, misinformation, and incitement.

These elections, rooted in Article 1 of the 1995 Constitution, aim to enhance democratic participation without fostering division.

The results will contribute to electoral colleges that select SIG representatives for Parliament.
