The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that Wednesday, February 4, 2026, will be the polling day for local government council elections in electoral areas across the country where voting was not conducted or concluded earlier.
In a press release, the commission said the polls will cover areas where voting failed to take place or was disrupted due to unforeseen circumstances during the earlier election period.
“The Electoral Commission informs political parties, candidates, voters and the general public that Wednesday, 4th February 2026, has been appointed as the polling day for local government council elections in the various electoral areas across the country where polling was not conducted or not concluded on the previously appointed polling dates,” the statement reads.
According to the commission, elections will be held for chairpersons, directly elected councillors, women councillors and councillors representing special interest groups, including youths, older persons, workers and persons with disabilities.
These elections will take place at the city, district, municipality, city division, sub-county, town council and municipal division levels, where applicable.
Polling will be conducted at all designated polling stations in the affected areas, and at venues for the respective electoral colleges, starting at 7.00am and closing at 4.00pm.
Counting of votes and declaration of results will begin immediately after the close of polling, in line with the law.
The commission also advised political parties and independent candidates that they will be allowed to deploy a maximum of two polling agents per polling station in the affected areas.
In a related development, the commission confirmed that the same polling date will apply to district and sub-county local government council elections in Butebo district, following a postponement announced on January 22.
“The commission has now appointed the same date for the district-level and sub-county and town council-level elections in Butebo District,” the statement said.
Voters in Butebo will elect the district chairperson, directly elected district councillors, district women councillors, sub-county chairpersons, sub-county directly elected councillors and sub-county or town council women councillors.
Voting in Butebo will also take place under universal adult suffrage from 7.00am to 4.00pm at all polling stations across the district.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the chairperson of the EC, called on voters and all stakeholders to participate peacefully and observe the electoral laws, regulations and guidelines.
