EC clarifies use of presidential security vehicles

Date:

Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission (EC), has clarified that the commission will repurpose security vehicles allocated for presidential candidates if the number of nominated candidates is fewer than the available vehicles.

Speaking to Bbeg Media this morning at the commission’s new headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Mucunguzi provided details on the allocation process.

“We shall utilise these security vehicles for other commission tasks if the number of presidential candidates is lower than planned. So far, we have assigned only three out of ten vehicles. We expect to provide vehicles to Kyagulanyi and Mafabi, but if other aspirants meet the requirements, they will also receive them,” Mucunguzi stated.

By close of the exercise yesterday, eight candidates had been nominated for president.

He explained that the vehicles are government property, and if fewer candidates qualify than anticipated, the commission will reassign them to other duties, primarily within its own operations.

Mucunguzi also addressed concerns about nomination expenditure, which covers services such as catering, decoration, stationery, public relations, security, media, and transport. He confirmed that the organising committee had prepared a budget for these services but was unable to disclose the total expenditure.

The provision of security vehicles is mandated by the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Act to enhance the safety of candidates during their campaigns.
