EC calls for calm as youth vote for parish-level committees

Date:

Today, young people across Uganda will participate in elections to select their parish-level youth committee members.

The voting, taking place in 10,595 parishes nationwide, runs from 9 AM to 4 PM.

According to Julius Mucunguzi, the Electoral Commission Spokesperson, only youth who are already members of village-level youth committees are eligible to vote. These village committee members will form an electoral college at the parish level to choose nine representatives for each parish committee.

Mucunguzi noted that the candidates for these positions have already been nominated. Voters will line up behind their preferred candidate, their picture, poster, symbol, or agent during the election process.

The Electoral Commission has called on all participants to maintain peace and respect throughout the elections.

“Elections are not a battle or a life-or-death matter,” Mucunguzi emphasized. He urged the youth to avoid violence and confrontation, stressing that supporting different candidates or parties should not lead to enmity.

“You may have different choices, but you should remain civil, respectful, and united,” he added.
