Dr. Twaha Kagabo to contest as Independent in Bukoto South after NRM primaries defeat

Date:

Dr. Twaha Kagabo Mzee, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bukoto South Constituency in Lwengo District, has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming general elections. This decision marks a shift from his earlier position of conceding defeat after the NRM primaries.

Dr. Kagabo, who recently defected from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), contested the NRM flagbearer position for the same constituency in the forthcoming elections. However, he lost the primaries to Muhammad Muyanja Mbabali, who had previously represented the constituency in the 10th Parliament.

According to the results declared by Abasi Mubiru, the Lwengo District NRM Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Dr. Kagabo secured 2,501 votes, coming second to Mbabali, who garnered 4,965 votes. Gonzaga Muteesasira came third with 534 votes, while Rogers Matovu placed last with 37 votes.

Immediately following the declaration of results on 18th July, Dr. Kagabo conceded defeat and expressed his intention to support President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM party in securing a victory in the area. However, on Sunday, he reversed his decision, announcing his candidacy as an independent, aligning himself with NRM-leaning supporters.

In his statement, Kagabo cited irregularities in the electoral process as the primary reason for his change of heart. He accused the election process of voter intimidation, bribery, rigging, and improper handling of the voters’ register and unverified DR forms during the tallying. He emphasized that NRM supporters in Bukoto South were determined to ensure that votes were not stolen and that the will of the people prevails.

“There were glaring irregularities in the entire electoral process, including voter intimidation, bribery, rigging, and failure to use the branch voters’ register. The NRM supporters in Bukoto South have said that we have a duty to ensure there are consequences to stealing votes in party primaries. Our votes must count, and the will of the people must prevail,” Kagabo stated.

Dr. Kagabo’s move follows a similar stance by Ibrahim Kitatta, the Lwengo District Chairperson, who also disputed the results of the Bukoto West NRM flagbearer primaries. Kitatta, who lost to incumbent MP Muhammad Muyanja Ssentaayi, labeled the primaries as a sham, alleging that the process was marred by significant irregularities and rigging, including interference by security personnel favoring the incumbent.

Like Kagabo, Kitatta has declared his intention to run as an independent. The NRM primaries have come under widespread criticism, with numerous candidates alleging unfair practices. The NRM Electoral Tribunal has reportedly registered 356 petitions stemming from the Parliamentary and L.C.V flagbearer elections, further indicating the growing dissatisfaction within the party.
