Survivors like Doreen Ainomugisha, a Senior Four student, shared that the fire consumed all her possessions, including her money, clothes, and academic documents—leaving her with only the school uniform she was wearing. Another student, Fausta Natasha, recalled seeing the dormitory engulfed in flames while they were attending morning prep, lamenting the loss of critical items such as her pass slips, birth certificate, and registration documents.

Despite the severe property loss, no injuries or fatalities were reported. Head teacher Ms Olive Nuwasasira expressed gratitude to community members, especially boda boda riders, who quickly responded to help ensure the students’ safety. She noted that while the students remain in class, there is an urgent need for support to replace the destroyed personal items. The school suspects the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, citing recent power outages.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson Mr Apollo Tayebwa confirmed that statements had been recorded and the scene examined. Preliminary findings point to an electrical short circuit, though inquiries are still underway.

The incident adds to a growing number of fire-related disasters affecting institutions across Uganda, raising concerns about student safety and the need for improved infrastructure and emergency preparedness in schools.
