David Bahati declares he won’t run as an independent in Ndorwa West

Date:

David Bahati, the minister of State for Industry, has confirmed he will not contest in the 2026 parliamentary election as an independent candidate. The decision, he said, was reached after extensive consultations with President Museveni, party leaders, constituency supporters, and well-wishers.

Bahati, who has served as MP for Ndorwa County West since May 2006 until his defeat in the July primaries, expressed gratitude to his constituents for their unwavering support.

“Your trust and confidence in me remain one of my greatest honours,” he said.

Over nearly two decades, Bahati said he had dedicated himself to improving family livelihoods, promoting sports and talent through initiatives like the Bahati Cup, and amplifying the voices of his constituents in Parliament.

Citing a “deep sense of responsibility” to maintain the unity and stability of the NRM and promote peace within Kabale, Bahati announced his decision to forgo running as an independent. He referenced Article 8(4)e of the NRM Constitution, which prohibits the district party chairperson from standing or campaigning against official NRM flag bearers.

“Running as an independent would go against the spirit of cohesion that our president and party have tirelessly worked to uphold,” he explained.

While he will not appear on the ballot in 2026, Bahati emphasised his continued commitment to serving the people of Kabale, Kigezi, and Uganda in various capacities to foster a “better, prosperous, and united” region.

He urged his supporters to remain calm and mobilise for President Museveni and the NRM in the upcoming elections to “protect the gains” achieved under the party’s leadership.
