Daily Monitor scraps Sqoop from its Friday edition

Date:

It’s Deep! That was the Sqoop tagline, a popular pull-out which Daily Monitor has scrapped from its physical edition.

Sources at the Namuwongo-based newspaper told Bbeg Media that the pull-out, which used to come out in the paper’s Friday edition, will now be only accessed online and only for subscription members.

“We were shocked by the decision [to scrap Sqoop] but I think it was due to the prevailing financial situation,” a senior editor told us, preferring to remain anonymous. The newspaper also recently scrapped Full Woman, a pull-out that centred on women’s issues, from its Tuesday edition.

Yet Sqoop was arguably the paper’s most popular pull-out. It primarily centred on entertainment and leisure news and was the perfect starter to the weekend. It was designed to appeal to young and trend-following people, particularly those starting out their careers in the corporate world with some loose change to spare on Fridays.

It featured Gossip, Movie Review and sections like Four One One, which focused on trending news about celebrities in the entertainment world.

It also featured columnists like Ian Ortega, the late Kevin Aliro’s son, whose witty writing style and deep introspection of some of life’s underappreciated topics made him a favourite of many.

So sad that it will no longer be available in the physical paper!
