Court Adjourns Nyanjura’s Case Of Becoming A Common Nuisance

Date:

The common nuisance case against five Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters, including Kampala City Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, has been adjourned to March 10, 2025.

Trial Magistrate Winnie Nankya informed the defense on Tuesday that the suspects were unable to appear in court due to a clothing issue. Prison authorities had reportedly prevented them from wearing blue T-shirts bearing the slogan “Kill Me, Spare Besigye.”

The five women were remanded to Luzira Women’s Prison after allegedly participating in an unauthorized procession on Ben Kiwanuka Street in Kampala on February 17, 2025. They are accused of causing public annoyance, obstruction, and infringement of common rights.

“The last time we were here, we made an application and the state found a reason to have them remanded. They claimed that they needed time to verify their documents. When we came back today expecting the state to make their reply, they came up with a new tactic,” the group’s lawyer Mugabi Konil said on Tuesday.

These women, along with MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and others, also face earlier charges related to common nuisance for planning a march to the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala.

Notably, Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has been involved in similar cases previously. In August 2024, she was part of a group that marched to the Kenyan High Commission, which resulted in a common nuisance case that was later dismissed.
