The Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has called for peaceful conduct by all political actors ahead of the 2026 general elections, scheduled for January 15.
In his New Year message, Byabakama urged candidates at all levels to avoid actions that could undermine peace, including tribal sentiments, personal abuse of opponents and incitement to violence. He said candidates should demonstrate patriotism and commitment to national unity throughout the electoral process.
“Tribal sentiments, abuse of fellow opponents and inciting violence must be avoided. Candidates must show a degree of patriotism by refraining from such acts, and those who feel aggrieved by the electoral process should seek redress through the proper legal channels,” Byabakama said.
Byabakama also expressed optimism about the introduction of biometric voter verification machines, saying the technology would be operationalised in accordance with the law. He said the machines are expected to improve the credibility of elections by addressing challenges such as multiple voting, vote rigging and other irregularities.
“The machine is clear and will create harmony in the election process,” he said.
He further extended appreciation to various stakeholders for supporting the commission’s electoral roadmap and ensuring its implementation. He specifically cited parliament, civil society organisations and political parties for their cooperation and engagement in the electoral process.
