The Territorial Police in Buikwe District are investigating the circumstances under which one Kitimbo Mwesigwa, a 25-year-old teacher and resident of Nakirimira Village, Kityerera Sub-county, Mayuge District, allegedly committed suicide.

The incident occurred on 1st July 2025 at 5:56 p.m. at the Buikwe District Police Headquarters, specifically in the police cells at Lugazi Police Station, located in Lugazi Municipality.

According to reports , It is alleged that the deceased, who was being held on charges of aggravated defilement under Lugazi CRB 196/2025, hanged himself using his shirt on the window bars of the police cells’ toilet.

SP Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Region Spokesperson says preliminary findings indicate that in March 2025, while working at Hopeland Junior School in Kitoola, Lugazi, Mwesigwa, defiled a 14-year-old Primary Six pupil. The act reportedly caused serious reproductive health complications. The victim was allegedly threatened by the suspect not to disclose the incident.

The matter came to light when the school noticed the pupil had developed a medical condition that caused loss of bladder control. Instead of reporting to the police, the school attempted to treat the child privately.

The issue persisted until May 2025, when the pupil returned home for holidays and the case was finally reported to Lugazi Police under SD 21/02/05/2025, leading to a full investigation under CRB 196/2025.

Upon learning that the school administration had discovered the matter and convened a meeting, the suspect fled the school. On 25th June 2025, the Head Teacher, Director of Studies, and School Director of Hopeland Junior School were arrested and charged with being accessories after the fact of defilement and conspiracy to commit a felony. They were arraigned in court on 26th June 2025.

Following their arrest, efforts to locate Kitimbo intensified, and he was finally arrested on 30th June 2025 from Sechel Junior School in Kakiri, Wakiso District. He was then detained at Lugazi Police Station, where the alleged suicide occurred the following day.

Butoto said a case of suicide by hanging has been registered, and investigations are ongoing. Statements have been recorded from eight other suspects who shared the detention cell with the deceased, as well as from the cell guard.

She said the body has been conveyed to Kawolo General Hospital for a postmortem examination as further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
