Bugiri Fatal Accident Claims 12 Lives, Others Left With Several Injuries

Date:

Twelve people have died in a tragic road accident that occurred at Lwaba Village, Kapyanga Sub-county in Bugiri District, along the Jinja–Malaba highway on 6th April 2025.

The accident happened at around 9:20 p.m and involved a taxi, registration number UBQ 772A, traveling from Kampala to Tororo, which collided with a trailer carrying a container, registration number KBM 175S, heading in the opposite direction from Malaba to Kampala.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident is suspected to have been caused by a boda boda rider who was attempting to overtake the trailer. In an effort to avoid hitting the rider, the trailer collided with the taxi, causing the container to fall on the vehicle.

Nine people reportedly died on the spot, while one more died as seven others were being rushed to the hospital. Two more people, believed to have been on the motorcycle involved in the incident, also died instantly.

The Toyota Hiace, commonly known as a “drone,” was completely crushed. The identity of its driver is not yet known. The motorcycle’s registration number also remains unknown.

Among the six injured is the trailer driver. All the injured were taken to Bugiri Hospital for treatment.

Busoga East Police spokesperson SP Michael Kafayo confirmed that two more bodies were recovered from beneath the container, bringing the death toll to twelve. It is suspected that these may have been women riding on the boda boda.

The bodies of the deceased are currently at Bugiri Hospital, pending postmortem examinations.
