President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered for the immediate re-opening of border posts that are near positions held by the M23 rebels in DRC.

According to Col. Chris Magezi, the Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces UPDF, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, some of these border posts are Bunagana, and Ishasha.

According to a statement shared by Magezi on his X Handle today, Thursday, 10th July, 2025, President Museveni said nothing should, “stop our people’s trade. We shall investigate ALL the officials who blocked this natural commerce.”

The M23 rebels have effectively curved out a quasi-state in Northern Kivu, collecting taxes said to be to the tune of 1M dollars per month from cross border trade and minerals.

“CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba:

The President and CIC UPDF has said ALL border posts that are situated next to M23 positions must be IMMEDIATELY RE-OPENED.

These are Bunagana, Ishasha etc. NOTHING should stop our people’s trade. We shall investigate ALL the officials who blocked this natural commerce.” Tweeted Magezi.
