Police in Kampala are investigating a tragic incident that claimed the lives of a couple in Katwe Nkere Zone, Makindye Division in the early hours of Thursday, 10th July, 2025.

The deceased have been identified as Ssefuma Charles and Namayube Tina, who were reportedly electrocuted due to an illegal electricity connection.

According to preliminary reports, the tragedy unfolded when Namayube Tina was hanging clothes to dry and came into contact with a live electric wire that had been illegally connected between two rooftops. She was electrocuted instantly and cried out for help.

Her husband, Ssefuma Charles, rushed to rescue her but was also electrocuted in the process.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the incident. He stated that neighbors quickly rushed the victims to nearby medical facilities. Ssefuma was taken to Lifeline Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, while Namayube was taken to Kiruddu Hospital, where doctors confirmed she had already died.

Onyango said that police strongly suspect the electrocution was caused by an illegal electricity connection. He appealed to the public to refrain from making such hazardous connections, emphasizing the risk to life and property.

“This incident highlights the deadly consequences of illegal power connections. We urge residents to always engage qualified electricians and avoid tampering with electrical systems,” Onyango added.

The police continue to investigate the source of the illegal connection and have launched a campaign to raise awareness about electrical safety in the area.
