Recently the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine led the 5th Annual NUP Diaspora Convention at the Boston Marriott Burlington held from August 7-11, 2025.
According to sources within the party who preferred anonymity, the convection intended as a high profile event for NUP supporters in the diaspora, alleged ended in significant financial loses, leaving the party struggling to settle the bills.
The event hosted at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Massachusetts, reportedly left NUP in debt to multiple service providers.
One insider claimed the hotel is still demanding $5,432 USD for unpaid charges.
Witnesses’ alleged that Kyagulanyi was seen in the hotel corridor discussing with close colleagues how they would raise the money to cover the costs.
“They decided to put up a GoFundMe to help them cover the debts,” the source said.
In an awkward moment that has since been widely discussed among diaspora circles, one Ugandan resident of Boston was allegedly approached for a contribution as he headed to work. He reportedly replied: “Don’t cry for me. I am not a child of your mother. I am not the one who produced you, don’t cry for me.”
Some members within NUP reportedly urged Bobi Wine to consider requesting emergency funding from the Ugandan government, warning that without settling the debt promptly, there could be legal or reputational consequences.
The Boston convention had been billed as an opportunity to rally diaspora support for NUP’s political agenda ahead of the 2026 Ugandan general elections.
It featured keynote speeches including one from Barbie Kyagulanyi, whose remarks sparked online debate as well as fundraising sessions and strategic planning meetings.
While official financial statements from NUP regarding the Boston event have not been released, internal critics are questioning both the planning and execution of the convention, arguing that the losses could weaken the party’s ability to organize future international events.
