Bobi Wine Slams Alleged Abduction of NRM MP Tinkasiimire, Urges Immediate Release

Date:

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has condemned the alleged abduction of Buyaga West MP Barnabas Tinkasiimire, describing it as a troubling sign of growing state repression in Uganda.

According to Kyagulanyi, the legislator was forcibly taken by over ten armed men in an unmarked van from a petrol station in Makerere on Sunday evening. Despite being a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Tinkasiimire had recently spoken out against what he called poor governance and President Museveni’s perceived succession plans involving his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Kyagulanyi said the MP’s family has been unable to locate him and fears he is being held incommunicado under abusive conditions—a fate many abducted individuals have reportedly suffered. He urged Ugandans to demand the MP’s immediate release and warned that political repression in Uganda now targets individuals across the political spectrum.

This latest incident underscores mounting concerns from opposition leaders and human rights groups over increasing politically motivated abductions, especially as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections. Despite public outcry, security agencies had not commented on Tinkasiimire’s disappearance by press time.
