Former Da Mighty Family comedian, Sami Okonya popularly known as Sami Mighty has made a dramatic and emotional statement, publicly banning National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, and his party members from attending his burial when he dies.
Speaking from Mulago National Referral Hospital on July 24, 2025, where he is recovering after abdominal surgery, Okonya expressed deep regret for ever joining the NUP political movement. He says his involvement with the party has brought nothing but pain, suffering, and abandonment.
“I don’t want Bobi Wine or anyone from NUP near my grave,” that party destroyed my life completely,” Okonya said bitterly.
Once an outspoken supporter of NUP and a familiar face at its rallies, Okonya now says the price of that loyalty was too high. His activism led to multiple arrests, public attacks, and, eventually, the collapse of his marriage.
“My wife warned me not to get involved in politics, but I didn’t listen,” now I’m alone, sick, and financially broken. My family fell apart. NUP left me when I needed them most.” he added.
According to Okonya, NUP offered very limited support during his illness. After initial treatment at Wandegeya and a small contribution of Shs 1 million, he claims the party stopped following up on his condition.
“I felt abandoned. After all the sacrifices, they just disappeared. That’s when I knew I was on my own,” he said with visible frustration.
What surprised many is Okonya’s gratitude toward singer Bebe Cool, a known supporter of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Despite their opposing political views, Bebe Cool reportedly intervened during a critical moment and arranged for Okonya’s transfer from Bombo Military Hospital to Mulago, ensuring he received better care.
“I have to thank Bebe Cool. He stepped in when no one else would,” Okonya said. “Despite our differences, he treated me like a human being. That’s something I didn’t expect.”
Okonya is now appealing to well-wishers for help with his medical bills and daily needs, saying he feels forgotten by the political group he once risked everything for.
His sharp criticism of Bobi Wine and NUP has stirred public debate, especially among NUP supporters, many of whom have remained silent or dismissive of his claims. The comedian, however, insists his words come from a place of betrayal and pain not politics.
“Let them stay away from my funeral. I’ll rest better knowing the people who abandoned me in life won’t stand over me in death,” he concluded.
