National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has once again come under scrutiny for his inability to articulate clear policy positions during his just-concluded Canadian tour.
While addressing Ugandan diaspora members and potential donors, Bobi Wine was pressed by Canadian journalists to outline his policy plans for Uganda should he be elected president. However, the musician-turned-politician stammered through his responses, offering no concrete solutions and leaving many in attendance questioning his readiness for national leadership.
This is not the first time Kyagulanyi has struggled with policy questions. Just days earlier in South Africa, attendees walked out of his rally after he admitted he had no new policies to present, instead vaguely promising to implement President Yoweri Museveni’s ten-point programme.
His consistent failure to grasp key governance issues has raised concerns among his supporters, many of whom are beginning to doubt his capacity to lead. Back in 2020, Bobi Wine faced heavy criticism after failing to explain his fiscal policy measures, further exposing his lack of preparedness for high office.
Several Canadian donors who had previously supported Bobi Wine’s political movement expressed disappointment, with some reconsidering their financial backing.
“We believed in the idea of change, but how can we invest in a leader who doesn’t even understand the basics of policy? Leadership requires more than just charisma,” said one donor who was in attendance.
Another donor added, “It’s becoming clear that he lacks the depth needed to run a country. We need solutions, not slogans. If he can’t answer simple questions, how will he handle the complexities of governance?”
With Uganda’s next general elections approaching, Bobi Wine’s repeated policy failures may further erode his credibility, leaving many wondering whether the opposition has a viable alternative to the current government.
