Assistant DPP Found Dead at Home Days After Disappearance

Date:

A senior Ugandan prosecutor has been found dead in her home days after being reported missing, sparking shock and questions over her sudden death.

Fatuma Nabiwemba Ssendagire, 47, an Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, was discovered lifeless in her residence in Wampeewo, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, on the evening of July 10, 2025. She had reportedly last been seen on Monday, July 7, with neighbors noticing something amiss after spotting swarms of flies around her house. Concerned, they broke in and found her body lying on the bed.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed her death in a statement, noting that funeral details would be shared later. The cause of death remains unclear, pending a postmortem examination.

Police said she lived alone and showed no signs of physical injuries. Her body was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for further investigation. Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed that detectives recovered several items from her home, including a document believed to be from Butabika National Mental Hospital.

Sources revealed that Nabiwemba had not been to work in several days, and this, combined with her solitary living arrangement, delayed the discovery.

Nabiwemba had previously gone missing in 2017 and was later found safe, with her family attributing the incident to mental health struggles following the tragic loss of her infant. Her husband, Dr. Ibrahim Ssendagire, once shared that she suffered from postnatal depression after the death of their two-and-a-half-month-old baby, a trauma that deeply affected her wellbeing.

Her passing has brought renewed attention to the challenges of mental health, even among high-ranking professionals, and prompted discussions about early intervention and support systems.
