US-based Acram Gumisiriza has revealed that he is using his divorce from Hajjat Kulthum as a gateway to obtaining American citizenship with his new partner.
In a leaked audio, Acram is heard speaking to a female acquaintance during a phone call, stating that he is currently staying with a new woman he plans to marry. He termed the divorce as a deal that he initiated two years back to allow him to be a single man and get married to a woman for a green card.
“Hajjat is saying all that out of pressure from the media, and I do not care about addressing the matter. This works for me because I’m targeting the papers. I’m currently undergoing a divorce. We are not separating in real life, but we are drawing attention,” he said.
Having made it to the US as a married man, Acram noted that the divorce would help him clear his status with the embassy.
He expressed his joy towards the media and bloggers who spread the divorce news because it helped him convince the embassy that he was a single man again and could marry a woman of his choice.
“All my documents say that I’m married. It is what I’m trying to erase from my papers for the embassy. All the noise that the media made when it came out benefited me so much. When I marry this woman, I will get the papers, and you will soon see our wedding pictures,” he said.

Acram, however, emphasized that the upcoming marriage would be a sham, as he still loved his wife and wouldn’t walk away from their union.
“The marriage is not real, though. Hajjat is my wife. I can get another woman here, but it doesn’t erase the fact that Kulthum is my wife. Unless she wants to move on,” Acram said as he quickly cut the call, claiming his new woman had come into the room.
Kulthum last week announced the end of her marriage, emphasizing that she had involved religious leaders to take on the divorce proceedings.
