Date:

The police have confirmed that five people died and 21 others were injured in a road crash that occurred on March 5, 2025, at Mayanja Valley along the Kampala-Bombo Road.

In a statement released on March 6, 2025, by the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, Micheal Kanunura, it was reported that the crash involved nine motor vehicles — UBQ 745N (Toyota Noah), UAY 704B (Toyota Hiace), UAT 652K (Toyota Hiace), UBK 769A (Fuso Super Grande), UBD 829G (Toyota Hiace), UAL 333C (Toyota Corolla), UAV 026F (Toyota Hiace), UBQ 062B (Toyota Sienta), UBD 483N (Toyota Hiace) — and one motorcycle, UES 773K (Yamaha).

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of motor vehicle UBK 769A Fuso Super Grande, traveling from Kampala to Bombo, lost control while sloping at Mayanja Valley, resulting in a collision with nine vehicles and  one motorcycle traveling in the same direction, ”Kananura stated.

According to Kananura, the incident  instantly killed five occupants in other vehicles and  one motorcycle rider, while injuring 21 passengers in T/Hiaces.

The injured victims were taken to Mulago Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to Mulago City Mortuary. The vehicles involved were towed to Kawempe Police Station for inspection as investigations began.

Police urged all motorists to prioritize road safety by ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, adhering to speed limits and driving defensively to prevent such tragic incidents.

The incident is part of a series of recent road accidents in Uganda, including a bus collision on the Kampala-Masaka highway that claimed eight lives, underscoring growing concerns about speeding and reckless driving.

In response to rising road accidents, the Uganda Traffic Police have intensified enforcement operations, arresting over 1,000 drivers for traffic-related offenses in February 2025.

Despite these challenges, Uganda has made significant strides in infrastructure development, such as the launch of the Kampala Flyover, aimed at reducing congestion and improving road safety.
