Over six people were killed and eight others critically injured on Thursday morning when the passenger omnibus, popularly known as Drone, they were traveling in rammed into the back of a parked sugarcane truck on the Jinja-Iganga Highway at Kakira.
Around 3 am in the morning, a parked sugarcane truck (number UAF 333B) and a Toyota Hiace (registered UBP 574J) traveling from the Iganga side collided.
Six people were instantly killed when the Namisindwa District taxi struck the back of the stationary truck as it was speeding, according to witnesses. The deceased were carried to the hospital mortuary, and the injured were taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.
Mable Asingwire, the Kiira Region Traffic Officer, confirmed the accident details. “The accident resulted in the loss of six lives on the spot, and the injured passengers were taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention,” she said.
Local authorities are now advising drivers to be extra cautious, particularly in high-risk regions like Kakira, to help limit the frequency of such terrible tragedies. The Kakira portion of the Jinja-Iganga Highway is renowned for accidents.
