UACE Students Found Using AI To Cheat Exams

Date:

Two Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) students who are registered with Masaka Hall are the subject of an examination malpractice case that Masaka police have opened an investigation into.

During Monday’s exam, the students, Nabahinda Cecilia and Nakiyimba Grace, were photographed using smart phones.

Jennifer Kalule, a spokesman for the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), claimed that one of the applicants downloaded an essay using artificial intelligence, while the other had summarized notes saved on the phone.

In connection with this, five teachers were detained by Kiira Division police for unlawfully possessing exam materials or information that seemed to be UNEB exam papers, in violation of provision 25(i) of the UNEB Act, CAP 259.

“The two female candidates include Nabahinda Cecilia and Nakiyimba Grace. They were found with smartphones in the examination room during the afternoon paper. One was using artificial intelligence to download an essay, while another had summarised notes on the phone,” Mrs. Kalule said in a statement on Monday.

The accused include a 24-year-old Mugaga Ramathan Male, who was deployed as an invigilator at Kirinya C/U Primary School. He is a resident of Banda Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala.

The second accused is Tumuhimbise Ronald, a 40-year-old teacher and resident of Kabeko village, Sembabule District, and a teacher of Kisoso Primary School in Masaka City.
