Police in Agago District have arrested a 66-year-old woman accused of murdering her 77-year-old husband during a domestic dispute, using a pounding mortar as the weapon.
The suspect, Veronica Abalo, is alleged to have fatally attacked her husband, Everesto Opiyo, on the night of Sunday, June 22, following a heated altercation. The couple lived in Aywee Village, Paimol Sub-county, Agago District.

According to authorities, Opiyo died on the spot. While the specific cause of the conflict remains unclear, police believe Abalo and her son, Charles Kidega, jointly assaulted the elderly man around 10:00 p.m., ultimately leading to his death.
Kidega reportedly fled immediately after the incident and is currently being sought by police. A murder case has been filed at Kalongo Police Station.
“It is alleged that on June 22, 2025, at about 10 p.m., the deceased was struck on the head with a pounding mortar by his wife and son, causing his death,” said Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson Joe Oloya.
Oloya further stated that detectives have visited the crime scene and recorded statements from several witnesses, including members of the deceased’s family.
“The body was released to relatives for burial following an on-site postmortem,” he added.
This case contributes to a troubling rise in domestic violence incidents within the region. Since the start of the year, at least six people have lost their lives in domestic violence-related cases across the Aswa East Region.
In a similar case in May, a 26-year-old man in Agago District was arrested for allegedly killing his 60-year-old father, Lugen Kabaka, during a land dispute. The suspect, Alex Kilita, reportedly ambushed and killed his father while he was working in the garden. He later attempted to attack his mother, who escaped and alerted police.
In another incident, a woman in Lalal East Village, Adilang Town Council, was arrested for fatally stabbing her 22-year-old sister, Maurine Akot, who succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to Dr. Fargale Hospital.
According to the 2024 Annual Crime Report by the Uganda Police, 4,329 people were killed across the country last year. Leading causes of death included assault, poisoning, domestic violence, arson, shootings, and mob justice.
