2026: NRM says Museveni already has 2.2 million ‘votes’ before ballots are cast

Date:

President Museveni already has 2.2 million ‘votes’ in the bag even before the first ballot is cast in the 2026 elections, according to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) officials.

The number is based on the signatures (2.2 million) that the party submitted in support of its chairman to the Electoral Commission (EC) on September 12.

The party’s Secretary General, Richard Todwong, confirmed that all signatures were collected from genuine NRM members, including leaders across the country, each verified with a national identity card.

Todwong emphasised the party’s strength, saying “the NRM is fully prepared to present President Museveni as its presidential candidate on September 23 for nominations.”

On the same note, NRM treasurer Barbara Nekesa Oundo revealed that the signatures were gathered through the party’s nationwide structures, led by dedicated leaders. She explained that the NRM plans to employ the same strategy during the general elections to mobilise support for Museveni.

“If we can collect over 2.2 million signatures, it shows that at least 10 million people will vote for President Museveni in the general elections,” Nekesa said.

She said the NRM enjoys support not only from its members but also from well-wishers who agree with its vision. Nekesa noted that collecting signatures was a challenging task, requiring extensive nationwide efforts to reach and secure endorsements from supporters.

Meanwhile, transport and work came to a standstill as NRM supporters flocked to the EC headquarters on Jinja Road, 7th Street Industrial Area. Roads including Kitante, Kyaddondo, and areas up to Clock Tower experienced heavy traffic congestion, as supporters and leaders made their way to the EC offices.
